The 1/4 ounce Krugerrand gold coin from South Africa is one of the best known and at the same time one of the most popular gold coins in the world. The classic investment coin. This gold coin has been issued by the Rand Refinery in Germiston, near Johannesburg, since 1967. The addition of copper gives the Krugerrand its reddish color and thus increases its scratch resistance. The obverse of all Krugerrand coins shows South African President Paul Kruger (1882-1902), who is also depicted as a motif on the coin. The reverse features a springbok, the national animal of the Republic of South Africa. Formally, the Krugerrand is an official means of payment in South Africa in accordance with the South African Reserve Bank Ordinance.
