If you consider silver coins as an investment and want to use them to protect your savings or as a retirement plan, it is important to make sure that you get as much silver as possible for your money. However, there are a few special features to consider when making physical silver investments. Unlike buying investment gold in the form of bars or coins, comparable investments in silver coins or bars are subject to VAT. This means that when you sell silver coins you have already purchased, you usually get a little more than the material value, while when you buy silver coins, you have to pay corresponding premiums due to the VAT obligation and the associated production and distribution costs.

It is advisable to have a long-term investment horizon when buying silver coins , as the spread between purchase and sale prices is always in the double-digit percentage range and must be offset by a positive performance of the silver price in order to reach the profit zone.

As a rule, investors get the most silver for their money with "world-famous" ounce coins. With a weight of half or quarter ounce, the premiums on the material value are relatively high. The silver investment coins with a fine weight of one ounce that are currently particularly in demand in Germany and, in our experience, offer particularly attractive prices per ounce include the Vienna Philharmonic, the Maple Leaf, the American Eagle, the Kangaroo and the Krugerrand. They are all produced in particularly large numbers worldwide, which brings with it considerable cost and therefore price advantages. to physical silver investments Although VAT is charged on the purchase of silver bars or coins, these investments enjoy the same tax advantages under income tax law as their gold counterparts. If the silver is held for longer than twelve months, any price gains on sale are tax-free. However, if the holding period is less than twelve months, the profits realized must be taxed at the personal tax rate. An exemption limit of 600 euros has also been granted by the legislature. If this is exceeded, all profits from private sales must be reported to the tax office and taxed. The withholding tax rules do not apply to precious metals; instead, the regulations for private sales apply.
